Verses 1–6: Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

Commentary: Jesus sends His disciples out in pairs to proclaim the message of repentance and to heal the sick. This mission reflects Jesus’ call to simplicity, dependence on God, and a willingness to share the good news, even in places of rejection. Commentary: The narrative shifts to the tragic story of John the Baptist’s death. Herod, who is tormented by his conscience, is manipulated by his wife Herodias, leading to John’s beheading. John’s courage in calling out sin and his unwavering commitment to truth result in martyrdom. This passage highlights the cost of following God’s call, as well as the dangers of compromising truth for personal gain or fear of man. Despite the injustice, John’s ministry is a powerful witness to the faithfulness of God.

Verses 30–44: The Feeding of the Five Thousand
Commentary: In the midst of a busy ministry, Jesus and His disciples retreat to a desolate place, but a large crowd follows them. Moved by compassion for the people, Jesus teaches and heals them, then miraculously multiplies five loaves and two fish to feed the crowd. This miracle illustrates Jesus’ abundant provision and His care for both spiritual and physical needs. The disciples, though initially skeptical, witness firsthand the power of God to provide in impossible circumstances.

Commentary: After the feeding of the five thousand, Jesus sends His disciples ahead of Him in a boat while He goes up to pray. A storm arises, and the disciples are terrified when they see Jesus walking on water toward them. Jesus reassures them with the words, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.” He then calms the storm, demonstrating His power over nature. This event deepens the disciples’ understanding of Jesus’ identity and calls them to trust Him even in the most fearful circumstances.
